In January this year, Dr. Robert Parthesius from my Heritage Management Group at the Faculty of Archaeology and director of the Centre for International Heritage Activities (CIE) initiated a field school project on Robben Island.
Based in the World Heritage Site and former prison on Robben Island that currently serves as Multi Purpose Learning Centre, students in archaeology and heritage management from South Africa and some of my Leiden students worked closely together with staff members of Robben Island Museum (RIM) and the South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA). The school focused on heritage management and on maritime archaeology in cooperation with UNESCO. For further information, see the report at the Leiden University Website here.
